Where best to start for my first blog post but at the very beginning of my baking journey. I come from a family of keen (and talented!) home bakers. Both my mum and my grandma loved to bake, and I have so many fond memories of spending time in the kitchen when I was growing up. When I went to visit my grandparents in Suffolk, we used to bake butterfly cupcakes, cheese straws and mini meringues. I can’t tell you how much of the baking I actually contributed to at that point (I suspect I spent most of the time sitting on the kitchen stool, licking the spoon) but it’s definitely where my love of baking comes from!
They always made amazing cakes for my birthdays and other family celebrations. Mum and I had a look through some old photos and found some absolute gems - have a scroll to check them out! The first photo is a tea party cake that grandma made for my 2nd birthday, isn’t it cute? All the cakes look pretty vintage now (just like the outfits we are wearing…) which made me think about how even cakes have trends that go in and out of fashion. Even back in the 80s, it seems that grandma was trying to get some Instagram-able photos of her cakes, like in the second photo where the cake is precariously propped up against the back of a dining chair…
Despite the terrible photo quality (we’ll blame the camera for most of it, but I’ve put a little blooper reel of some of the photos I found at the bottom because I think they’re funny), I’m sure you can still appreciate the level of skill and effort that went into these cakes. And as a result of that, comes the appreciation and joy of the people receiving them. I think this sentiment is what has driven me to want to bake for people – cake brings people joy and help them to celebrate the most important moments in their lives. And I reckon being able to bring people joy is a pretty great job, don’t you?
